GLASS ART

History & the Art of Glassblowing

Over the course of history, artisans have endured tremendous heat to create beautiful glass forms out of fire using little more than their breath and a few simple tools. These artisans strove to polish their skills to uniformity and precision, yet each creation remained as individual as the maker.

In the early 1960’s, Professor of Glass & Pottery, Harvey Littleton began the movement from glass factory to artist studio utilizing a small furnace. Difficult at first, with scientific aid, a new form of glass emerged and the artist glass studio movement was born.

Romania

Though delayed by communism, the studio glass movement in Romania was alive and vibrant, much like that in the United States.

Ion Tamaian

In fact, Ion is considered a pioneer in the Romanian glass studio movement by developing his own glass furnace. Given Ion’s pioneering spirit, and post-communistic artistic surge, Ion’s glass is well rooted in the 21st Century and beyond. The uniqueness and history of hand made glass is alive today in every Ion Tamaian original.
